In the City Detective project, children, caregivers, and educators in Adıyaman will be informed about the city’s historical and cultural heritage, to reinforce the urban memory and sense of belonging, which were affected by the earthquake, through culture and arts. As part of the project, the workshop space owned by the municipality, located in the Hayat Parkı (Life Park), a post-earthquake initiative by civil society, will also be improved. The outcomes of the workshops focused on Perre and Adıyaman themes, conducted with children, will be showcased during the Perre Children and City Biennale, which is planned to last for five days. These results will be exhibited in the municipality’s cultural venues, accompanied by music and theatre performances.
The biennale events and workshops, which are planned to involve at least 600 children throughout the project, aim to be transformed into a sustainable programme.
The goal is to improve the municipal workshop space in Hayat Parkı and transform it into a permanent learning and creative experience centre for children, where workshops focusing on Adıyaman’s historical and cultural heritage will be organised. The aim is for children to learn about heritage elements, such as the Perre Ancient City, and use this knowledge in artistic creation processes, thereby fostering a strong connection with the city.
Through arts and cultural activities, the project aims to encourage children to explore the city’s history, cultural identity, and social values. In this way, the goal is to raise awareness among new generations. The Perre Children and City Biennale is designed as an educational and social development project that strengthens children’s sense of belonging to their city, to nurture them as the cultural ambassadors of the future.
In parallel with the preparation of the biennale, workshops, and child rights education will be conducted to encourage the development of child-friendly policies, programmes, and content within cultural projects. The goal is to foster the creation of creative networks and establish models in this context.
The project partner, the Adıyaman Municipality Department of Culture, along with participants from the Mekanda Adalet Derneği (Center for Spatial Justice) and the Koç University Anatolian Civilizations Research Center, will organise workshops in collaboration with local civil society organisations. These workshops will focus on the production of knowledge related to urban heritage, participatory practices, research, exhibition processes, and topics such as national and international stakeholders/possibilities, and memory spaces. The workshops aim to facilitate experience sharing around these themes.
City Detective, focusing on children’s right to live in a healthy and safe environment, works on monitoring and advocacy for the protection of livable cities and environmental values. The initiative develops cultural and art projects, design tools, and spatial design proposals. It organizes workshops, and walks, and creates city maps and children’s books to make the historical and cultural values of cities accessible and understandable for children. Additionally, City Detective fosters collaborations with cultural institutions to further its mission.
Adıyaman Municipality
As part of the project’s sustainability goals, capacity-building training will be organised for Adıyaman Municipality’s cultural affairs staff, aiming to enhance the municipality’s ability to work more effectively with children in cultural activities. The process of developing cultural policy will actively involve the production of knowledge and exhibitions related to urban heritage.
Center for Spatial Justice
Working toward the development of fairer, ecological, and democratic spatial processes, Center for Spatial Justice will support the development of participatory cultural policies through workshops organised in collaboration with Adıyaman Municipality.
ANAMED (Anatolian Civilizations Research Center)
With extensive experience in cultural knowledge production, ANAMED will collaborate with Adıyaman Municipality to organise workshops aimed at advancing participatory cultural policies.
